He then graduated from Gordon College with a law degree and later obtained a master's degree in political science from Punjab University. He also worked as an executive of Gulmarg Mills before entering politics.

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad started his political career as a student leader and a journalist. He joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) in 1985 and became a member of the National Assembly for the first time. He has been elected to the parliament eight times from his home constituency of Rawalpindi. He has served as a federal minister for various portfolios, including information and broadcasting, railways, interior, culture, tourism, industries, labour and manpower, overseas Pakistanis, and youth affairs. He has also been a close ally of former presidents Pervez Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif.

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad founded his own political party, Awami Muslim League (AML), in 2008 after leaving the PML-Q. He has been the president of AML since then. He has also maintained close relations with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its leader Imran Khan. He supported the PTI's movement against alleged electoral rigging in 2014 and joined the PTI-led coalition government in 2018. He is currently serving as the Minister of Railways in the cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan.Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad has been a prominent and influential figure in Pakistani politics for more than three decades. He has been associated with various political parties and movements, and has held several important portfolios in different governments.
